He employed TDArchitect to design a desirable, multiple-family home that would fit beautifully into a neighborhood in which the local planning board had special interest. The town was experiencing growth in the historic, well-established, downtown and the board had a particular interest to carefully manage the aesthetics in this area.
The objective for TDArchitect was to design an affordable, multifamily home that fit Ryan’s budget and integrated well into the surrounding single-family home landscape. The site was approximately 4500 sq ft and expected to accommodate a 3400 sq feet structure. Each unit would include two-bedrooms and have approximately 1100 sq ft, or 550 sq ft per floor. Of particular importance to the planning board was that the multiplex has a single-family appearance as much as possible. Ryan’s concern was to keep within a budget that would enable the homes to be affordable. The resulting triplex satisfied the planning board’s aesthetic requirements, Ryan’s budgetary constraints, was well received by the neighboring homeowners, and was rented before construction was completed.
