… to build their own dream vacation home. They had clear ideas and preferences for the project, however, they wanted an architect with whom to partner to help refine and develop their ideas as well as manage the project in their absence.
The property they chose has natural, beautiful, outcroppings over-looking the valley to the north. The
land presented unique opportunities for creative integration with the home design as well as challenging
considerations for property development. Tom and Liz wanted to enjoy the property’s features as much
as they did their new home. They live, dine, and entertain casually yet have specific and extensive food
preparation, cooking, and electronic requirements. They own a baby grand piano, wanted to
accommodate guest for extended stays, and value privacy and luxury. They wanted to create a smart
home and were open to exploring new options while retaining a classic ski-area exterior.
TDArchitect began with the natural features of the land. The home is optimally situated to maximize
views, integrate rock outcroppings into outdoor living space, and minimize costly excavating. The
covered porch and hardscaped patio plans connect the outcropping to the home. The covered porch
design has three areas; one open, one screened-in for dining, and one screened-in for hot
tubbing/entertaining. Customized to their lifestyle, the kitchen, dining, and living spaces are open to
each other and take advantage of the views. The radiant heat slab floor design is a beautiful, textured,
stained concrete. Traditional dining arrangements are replaced with a unique, custom-made, extended
bar-height art piece situated between the kitchen and porches for casual dining that over-looks the
outcropping and valley below. The grand foyer comfortably accommodates the baby grand piano and
seating in front of the floor-to-ceiling, see-through fireplace. The guest-room suite is on the first floor
while the luxurious master bedroom suite and additional bedroom are on the second floor affording all
parties privacy. The result is a beautiful home perfectly tailored to Tom and Liz’s unique tastes and
lifestyle.
